Courvelle Toyota is happy to serve the city of Lafayette, LA, the Pelican State's hub for Cajun and Creole culture. Located in the southern Mississippi Delta along the Vermilion River, Lafayette has a population of over 100,000 people and is home to the second largest Mardi Gras celebration in the state.
History
The area that is now Lafayette was originally occupied by the Attakapas tribe when French colonists founded a trading post along the Vermilion River. In the 18th century, Acadian refugees descended on the area after the Seven Years' War, resulting in the birth of Cajun culture. The area became Vermilionville in the early 19th century, and it was renamed Lafayette toward the end of the century in honor of the general of the same name. Today, Lafayette is considered the epicenter of Acadiana, making it a much-loved and well-visited destination for folks interested in Cajun and Creole culture and food.
Things to Do
If you want to experience Lafayette is it may have been over a century ago, check out Vermilionville, a 23-acre historic park and village. At Vermilionville, you'll find reenactments and recreations of parts of Acadian, Creole, and Attakapas culture as well as great food and arts and crafts. You can also visit the Acadian Cultural Center, which provides plenty of background on the Cajuns who helped make Lafayette what it is today.
Lafayette is also home to the famous Blue Moon Saloon, which is a popular destination for live music and revelry. Nothing speaks to fun quite like bellying up to a heaping Cajun meal, and you'll be able to get your fill of everything from gumbo and crawfish to boudin and beignets at beloved haunts like Don's Seafood, T-Coon's Restaurant, and Prejean's Restaurant. While you're in town, be sure to schedule a swamp tour if you want to catch a glimpse of a gator or take a hike on one of Lafayette's great trails.
